  • Cuomo seeks to exempt NY from drilling

ALBANY - Gov. Andrew Cuomo has requested that U.S. Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke exempt New York from President Donald Trump’s recent decision to open off-shore areas of coastal states to oil drilling.
While Trump said he would reverse an Obama-era ban on coastal drilling, Zinke said he was exempting Florida.
Zinke said Floridians made a strong case for continuing a drilling ban although Democrats have said they believe he was trying to help Florida’s term-limited Republican Governor, Rick Scott, who is looking at a run for the U.S. Senate.
The idea of off-shore drilling is unpopular in many coastal states for fears that potential spills could cause ecological harm and damage tourism in coastal areas.
“Your decision to remove Florida from consideration of any new oil and gas platforms before your department has even concluded its public fact-finding process appears arbitrary. Nevertheless, to the extent that states are exempted from consideration, New York should also be exempted,” Cuomo wrote to Zinke.
